Family photo sessions should feel joyful, playful, and relaxed—not stressful. But let’s be honest: getting little kids to cooperate for pictures can sometimes feel like a challenge! That’s why I build my sessions around games, connection, and engagement to capture authentic moments while keeping the experience fun for everyone.
Here’s how I guide family sessions, especially with little ones:
1. Start with Connection
Before we even worry about the camera, I focus on connection between family members. Simple gestures like hugs, cheek kisses, or nose boops create natural, heartfelt moments. Kids respond to genuine affection, and parents love seeing these little interactions captured forever. These moments set the tone for the entire session—relaxed, playful, and full of love.
2. Turn Photos into a Game
Kids love movement and play, so I often turn the session into a fun game. For example, I might say:
“On the count of three, run and give mom and dad the biggest hug ever!”
Games like this keep energy high, laughter flowing, and children engaged. Plus, they create natural, spontaneous photos that look and feel authentic.
3. Let Kids Be the Photographer
Sometimes kids need a break from being in front of the camera. One of my favorite tricks is letting them press the shutter to “take a picture” of mom and dad. I show them their photo, celebrate it, and then tell them it’s mom and dad’s turn to capture them.
This simple switch turns the session into a game and makes kids feel like part of the process, instead of being told what to do. It often leads to big smiles and playful expressions you just can’t stage.
